  • that i have to dig for news on the korean hostage situation in afghanistan... disappointing. outrageous. mystifying. i've been reading this blog for a while now and more recently, it's become news central for me on this situation. thanks to pastor eugene cho, author of the blog, for hooking up the news. i know of him peripherally because he officiated my sister's wedding years ago... but that's about it. it's a really good blog though. insightful and refreshing. some of what he's written has also even made me reconsider my beliefs, or lack thereof.

side note- i forgot to mention that my nephew is crawling. it's awesome.

  • two things:

-when you have two things to compare against one another, sometimes, it helps makes things a bit clearer

-for me, it's the little things that count and make a big difference

  • 5.78 miles today and it hurt like hell. from my office down to the mall and around the tidal basin twice. i pushed myself  harder than i should have for no good reason. i was told 30 minute maximum runs for a while... but i just felt compelled to keep going despite the pain. i must be a glutton for punishment. the route:

    07312007 run

  • 5.96 miles today. i felt closer to old form in that my energy level was good, i was motivated to run and my endurance was strong. i focused on mechanics, but it was also just good thinking time. i thought through a quandary and it no longer feels like "issue" per se... i guess that's kinda what happens when you're on the road for an hour or so though. it's nothing but you and your thoughts. no distractions. you block out the outside noise. and you are forced to think it through or else the issue in your mind just gets louder and louder. as for the quandary, the conclusion is to just go with the flow and let the right thing happen. be fair. be honest. and the chips will fall where they will. no decisions have to be made. and now as i'm typing, i'm also reminded that whatever the fear, whatever the dislike, (if that's truly the case,) it is ultimately about self and not the other person.

back to running though- i focused on using my rear to catapult off of the balls of my feet and i found that this also helped with picking up speed. i pretty much took one of my old routes today: to dupont, through rose park to georgetown, across key bridge, small loop in rosslyn and then the same way back. no significant pain, just a little bit of aching on the outside of my feet. we, the royal we meaning my PT, has gathered that some of my new pain is related to my now utilizing new and different parts of my legs and feet to run- it's stress and strain just because of this new utilization... and that's not a bad thing if that's truly the case. i'd like to go for a run again tomorrow evening and see if i can keep this up.

    the route:

  • have you ever had one
of those fights where you are going back and forth at each other, and
somewhere along the way, what you are arguing about gets lost and you
are all of a sudden bickering over semantics?

me: "no, what you said was..."

you: "i did not say that. you didn't hear me. i said..."

you go back and forth, and back and forth, and at some point, you probably realize that
you have no clue what you were arguing about in the first place, or that the original issue is
just completely buried. that was the scene last week as my sister and i were going at it with one another.

"i don't even know what we're arguing about," i said. "this is
pointless. i don't want to have this conversation anymore." i was about
ready to hang up the phone. under normal circumstances, the conversation would have ended then and
there. but with her, there was no way i was going to get away with
tossing aside the conversation just because i was over it.

"just because you're done with the conversation doesn't mean it's going to end. you can't just be done with it. you have to listen to the other person. you don't listen!" she said. at this point, we were virtually yelling. i think my blood pressure had risen to a critical stage. let's just say we were having an intense sister to sister moment.

i bit my tongue and listened. i sucked it up and apologized. and within a minute or two, the fight ended and true to form, we were giggling about how ridiculous the whole situation was. what i
was reminded of through this little spat though, is the fact that there
    are
very few people who call me out on my b.s. and will not let me just
steam roll them... when i say i'm done, i usually expect that things are done. when i say i'm over a topic, i'm over it and expect others to move on along side me. but tell me that i'm being unreasonable or bratty? tell me that i just can't end a conversation because i'm through with it? it's rare that people "stand up" to me. and i can stand to have a few of those folks in my life-
just a few though, to occasionally put me in check when necessary.

it was a really laid back weekend, thank goodness. i think it was just what the
doctor ordered. friday evening, i ran in the rain, friday night i locked myself
out of my apartment and sat in the hallway drinking bud light until
someone could come to let me in. pitiful. saturday: dixie bones bbq,
potomac mall, pool time, laziness and more laziness. sunday was
essentially a northern virginia road show which included
gom ba woo, bubble tea at eden center and finally back to DC which included tono sushi later in the night.

    that's all folks!

  • i'm too tired to write anything prolific, or compelling. so here we go again with randomness:

-i've been complaining a lot lately about work. i can't help it. i've been busting my ass. i'll try to stop. it is what it is and i just need to get through this period.

-i don't think i'm going to be able to run for a bit. after monday's adventure, i'm in pain. 7:15am PT appointment tomorrow. we'll see what my PT says.

-i watched almost an entire episode of dateline tonight. chris hanson was doing another sting operation to catch a predator. i was so ashamed as a 30-something korean guy was caught. it was horrifying. chris asked him why he was going after a 14 year old... and he responded by saying he's tried dating sites to meet people his age but hasn't had much luck. he surmised it was because he is so short, or that people don't like asian guys because they think they are nerdy. i have little sympathy for him because it's just wrong to go after a 14 year old... but i'm empathetic at his plight as an asian man. i know that at times, it's not easy for you, which is why i have declared a loyalty to asian guys. i joke i'm an equal opportunity kind of gal, but at the end of the day, i know what's best for me.

-i'm heartbroken over the news that the taliban killed one of the south koreans they had taken hostage. i really thought they wouldn't go that route.

-this evening, it was a wine and cheese reception at the french embassy followed by a preview screening of "2 Days in Paris"... Julie Delpy was there to introduce the flick. great cheese, great wine, great movie... what a nice evening.

-sitemeter.com. i know you are reading my blog. i can see the hits based on city, IP address, type of web browser, entry page/exit page/outclicks, etc. thanks for stopping by. i can't imagine anything i blog about is interesting but it's nice to know you care enough to see what i'm up to. sorry i'm not more compelling.

    good night.

  • i need to start documenting how my body feels as i begin running more and start paying attention to my mechanics. today i took jog #2, the second run since taking a mandatory six or so week break. i was permitted twenty minutes for running today... but i took the liberty of running a little more than that. just a little more... the run and walk session totaled 5.09 miles. here was the route:

i had little to no pain while running. i tried to do as much as i could to run heel to big toe, pushing off of my big toes... pushing my hips forward a little, and then leaning forward slightly. i don't know how to control my body very well though. the only oddity was that i had "tingly" sensations in my feet and calves... but when i focused on pushing hard off of the balls of my feet, where the big toes are, and using my hips and gluts to gain momentum, the tingling went away and i think i found myself running faster, actually. or maybe that was in my head. all in all, i found it quite difficult to focus so much on my form. the running didn't seem quite as cathartic as it usually does when having to think so much about how i'm moving my body.

  • the weekend ended with a kimbap making session yesterday at my sisters with a pal. that was nice. plus she sent us home with cupcakes. delicious. later in the day, some work, some play time. gifford's and mehak in the evening. mccormick and schmick's for lunch today, where we had a tom daschle siting. and now i sit at work trying to stay afloat. i should just go home. i really should. i think i will as soon as i post this. go home. run. have a beer. do some work. that sounds divine.

oh yes, one more thing. today, i conceded that sometimes i have boaterish tendencies, especially when it comes to my grammar and vocabulary. this is sad, given the fact that i was born in the united states and english is the only language i know. perhaps i can blame this on public schools. for example... i realized i use "formidable" rather than "formative." i have been saying "disingenuine" which is not a word, rather than "disingenuous." i sometimes say "silver springs" rather than "silver spring." this is the short list of my faux pas. it's quite embarrassing. really.

  • i'm not sure when the last time is that i stayed out past 5am... but that was the case on friday/saturday morning. it was the hirshhorn's after hours, and then after that, a completely random series of events that included drinks at rasika despite the fact they were actually closed, five, and then the night culminated with fajitas at el tamarindo. the whole night was random and just kept growing even more random.

today though, i was able to take a run! it felt awesome. to georgetown, then i stopped for lunch, and then walked home. i'm psyched up. love it, love it, love it.

that's it. don't feel like sayin' much.

  • i have stacks of resumes sitting next to me that i'm ignoring for the moment. three things:

-i'm pretty mellow this week. or content. people both at and outside of work have commented on it... which makes me wonder, how high strung am i typically? i mean i know i can be tightly wound, but is it that bad? yikes.

-i had to do a mini firing this morning. it wasn't a big deal. a long
term temp, he wasn't performing, and so we're cutting him loose sooner
than later. of course, i had to deliver the news because i work with
managers and leaders who are coddled incessantly. after it was done and
over with, the manager looked at me and said, "i can't believe how easy
you just made that look. you have no heart." very nice. he was joking, i think. i will say,
that it gets easier over time to deliver bad news. i always start it with, i'm sorry, but...your position is being eliminated, we no longer have the budget to keep you on board, we are going to have to let you go, we've decided to terminate your employment with us, this isn't working
    out...
there are a dozen variations to and maybe because i do this professionally, it also makes it easy
    personally to send like messages.

the biggest lesson i've learned as it relates to this whole matter though- cutting ties- is that one must always treat the other person with dignity
when delivering the bad news. you've gotta remember that they have a
heart and feelings... but still remember that you're just doing what is
best for you, or best for the business. i think i still struggle with somehow conveying the compassion and respect for their dignity when it comes to this... you would hope that one shouldn't have the opportunity to practice this often to perfect it though. i mean, perhaps this is not something i should be striving for perfection in. does that make sense?

-sometimes, things don't happen the way you anticipate or want them to.
and as much as i hate a change of plans or even worse, not getting my
way, it's actually okay. you take the focus off of one thing- the
fluff, the junk you could make happen with anyone and at anytime- and
maybe what you get is the good stuff, the sweet stuff... the kind of
stuff that doesn't always come with every package. and then, you are
    pleasantly surprised.

    yay for friday.
